3rd year presentation for 'Dark Market'
dearest 3rd years!!!
Welcome back soon!
We would like to remind you that we expect you to hand in all your summer work on the first day back of the term on Monday, the 26th of September. To avoid confusion we would like to also remind you all that there is a small but important difference in the hand-in-requirements for the 'Dark Matter' brief for the illustrators and the animators.
It is mandatory for the animators to hand in a clearly labeled (name and project) Power Point Presentation, which includes research, moodboards, a 24 frame storyboard for a 1 minute film and at least 4 concept artworks. In addition to this digital format we would like the animators to print and mount their clearly labeled storyboard frames and concept artwork.
The illustrators have to hand in an interpretation of the ideas and themes within the book. Their solution might be character based or they might chose a more graphic or even abstract solution. They can chose any format as long as the work can be displayed on the walls. The illustrators have the freedom to chose if they want to hand in an additional Power Point Presentation to show the background of their research and ideas, however the emphasis on their hand-in-requirements will be on clearly labeled work that can be mounted or displayed on the walls next to the storyboards and concept art of the animators. We will discuss the work on Tuesday, the 27th of September and therefore the team would like to link the work created by the illustrators and the animators. This will only be possible if all the work is clearly labeled and visible from a short distance. The tutors will arrange the handed-in work on the walls on Monday afternoon.
We hope this answered some of the questions and we hope you are all as exited as we are to see you soon happy and refreshed again to start your final year at Kingston University.
best wishes Martina on behalf of the team

Showcase your work at macmillan Publishing
PAN MACMILLAN’S London office at 20 New Wharf Road, London N1 9RR has recently
undergone an extensive renovation providing a fresh, contemporary working environment.
We are now looking to use our new office as an exciting rolling exhibition space.
CRITERIA
We are inviting submissions of personal, non-commissioned pieces from art professionals,
illustrator agencies, art associations and colleges for our debut installation. We are looking
for innovative work demonstrating originality and imagination; work that reflects our own
standards of excellence and aspiration to create beautiful high-quality books of distinction.
The work must be a picture that can be wall mounted – unfortunately we do not have
facilities for sculptures or other free-standing works. We are anticipating selecting between
twenty and thirty works (provided that sufficient suitable work is submitted for consideration).
We intend to create a high-quality catalogue, with artist biographies and contact details.
Pieces will be displayed throughout our offices and available for sale, with all proceeds
being payable to the artist. No commitment is given by Pan Macmillan to sell any work or
to undertake any promotional or marketing activity. Each artist will set their own price – no
commission will be taken by Macmillan and all monetary transactions will take place directly
between buyer and artist.
HOW TO APPLY AND PROCESS
Art for consideration should be submitted by 19 August 2011 in digital form to
l.jones@macmillan.co.uk.

Illustrator Needed
I have recently created and developed an idea which I am about to take to a publishing house. It is called -Henri Le Worm- and is about a french cooking worm who lives in the forest of plenty (back garden veg patch) with a host of other friends Derek the ladybird , Lou the texan spider etc. The premise is to encourage children to start eating healthily and take an interest in cooking, with this in mind it is aimed at 5- 8 yr olds. Humour is strongly prevalent throughout whillst promoting healthy traditional values. It is very strongly character driven , which is why for the pitch instead of dumping a script on the table I want to either show them an animated scene or more realistically a book with each character drawn with his/her biography.
Unfortunately drawing is not my forte, if either yourself or a reccommended student would like to meet me to discuss this further or email me that would be great. I am willing to pay for each drawn character and the work will then get pitched to Bloomsbury Publishing House. It is also worth mentioning that the chef Raymond Blanc has endorsed the idea and will be writing the recipes.

All the best Oli

Dior Illustrated; Rene Gruau
Somerset House UNTIL 9th Jan
£5
'A celebration of the renowned illustrator René Gruau (1909-2004), who created some of the most iconic fashion images of the 20th century. This exciting exhibition showcases groundbreaking artworks including original illustrations for Christian Dior Parfums, vintage perfume bottles, sketches and magazines, as well as a selection of Dior Haute Couture dresses personally chosen by John Galliano including a special dres designed by Galliano himself, in homage to Gruau.

René Gruau’s bold lines and fluid style were perfectly in tune with the spirit of Dior, capturing the energy, elegance and audacity of the brand. His illustrations also tell of a special understanding Gruau had of Christian Dior himself, born of a close friendship between the two men. Gruau influenced the graphic style of a whole generation of fashion illustrators and the exhibition features specially commissioned pieces from five UK based illustrators, whose works draws inspiration from the rich collaboration between Gruau and the House of Dior.'

INTERNATIONAL WINNERS!!
Top International Illustration Competition has just anounced it's winners-. Only a handful of our Yr 3 students entered and THEY WON, Congratulations to ALL!
'3x3 student show winners announced
Judges have reached their decisions and we’re ready to announce the winners of this year’s 3x3 Student Show. We had more entries than ever before from over 20 countries and I have to say the quality of the entries was excellent, there were very few weak pieces—our judge’s selected their favorites.
¶ The voting process was based on a typical 4-point grading system but only work receiving a 3 or 4 were considered. Entries must have received a majority of our judges' votes with at least one of the judges awarding the piece a score of 4. To receive medals more than one judge had to award the entry a 4 with the best of show receiving a majority of 4 votes.
See list of winners.

medals
Alexandra Dommett of Kingston University, UK will receive our $1,000 cash prize as our Best of Show winner. $500 cash-value prizes will go to Gold Medal winners Victo Ngai, Rhode Island School of Design and Matthew Wood, Art Center College of Design.
¶ Silver medalists include Helen Davies, Kingston University, UK and Jonathan Bartlett, School of Visual Arts. Bronze winners include James Chong, Art Center College of Design, Victo Ngai and Tobias Jacob, Burg Giebichenstein Hochschule für Kunst und Design Halle, Germany. And Distinguished Merits go to Jessie Durham and Sean Lewis, Ontario College of Art & Design, Canada and Rachel Lillie, Kingston University, UK.'

QOUTE OF THE WEEK
“I look at the film makers of the past and many film makers of the present, and have really nothing but admiration. More than admiration, I survive from them, I live off that, I live off the inspiration I get from them.
I believe that it is vital, particularly artists, to know the past and know what’s been done in the past in order to access, reject, complain about, hate, love, or whatever, I mean how can you not?”

The Little Friends of Printmaking are a husband-and-wife team of silkscreen artists living and working in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Emerging into an already crowded poster art scene in early 2003, The Little Friends quickly established themselves as an indispensable new talent.

They have a great online shop, something that particularly caught my attention is the “BADDIES” print series: Find out more about the inner gangster, mugger, German, dirty cop and/or naughty leatherman within you.
